One of the things to remember online is that there are many different services out there for your online media.  You should familiarize yourself with your domain names and web hosting so you will know your way around when its time to make a website move.

Make sure that your web person is not the only one who knows how to login to your domain control panel.  Everyone who has a domain online, has a control panel they can use to update settings for their domain name.  You cant hurt anything by just simply knowing how to login to the control panel.  If you want to update your website and you start working with a new designer, this is something they will need.

If it comes time and you want to move your domain name, here is a quick how to do it.  I also recommend that you keep your domain name with the company you are hosting with.  Then there is only one control panel for everything website related.

In order to move a domain name, it has to be unlocked.  This is something you can do in your control panel.  Usually there is a small lock symbol.  Click that icon and it will either display an “Auth” code or email it to the email listed in the control panel profile.  When you setup a new account with another domain registar or web host, there will be a place for you to submit that code authorizing the new company to host your domain.
