Quick fix for a slow PC

Over the years I have had to work with many different computers.  Yes, I do go back and forth from a Mac to PC.  I do feel that both systems have their pros and cons, so for this reason I’m one of those few biased computer nerds.

In terms of trouble shooting your windows vista here are a few things to start with.  Don’t go taking your computer to the first fix it place the minute it acts up.  Don’t visit the online computer fixit site from that commercial on tv where the kid is using a mac and the disclaimer says for windows only.

After years of working in offices, I know as well as you do that 70% of working documents are not backed up. First things first, pick up a 250 gig USB storage drive somewhere.  Everyone sells them, but if you go to walmart you can usually find a Seagate(good brand name) for under 70 bucks.

Always get your documents backed up before your computer starts to act up worse than it already is.  Now its time to run just a general disk clean up.  The University of Delaware website has a really nice vista walkthrough for people to use.  here

This should clean up alot of memory hogging items that can affect your web browsers responsiveness.

Its all about the tools

There are alot of tools out there for the everyday person trying to get their feet wet in web design.  Now I still believe a webmaster is still a key person for any company to have.  A webmaster can take a good site and make it a “Great” site.  Just something to remember…

More and more people are becoming do-it-yourselfer’s when it comes to websites now.  One tool I have noticed out there now are web site generators.  These are handy and can get you something online fast.  Most are pretty generic, and resembly a plain looking business card online.

Site Studio is kind of like this.  You get to choose from hundreds of templates, and then you can choose what color pallets to match it to.  I noticed when I started offering web hosting that this was an option.  I have played around with it a bit, and for the average user this would be all they would need.  Once you have your theme and your colors, you just make pages.  Best of all the home user can go back in and make changes to their own text.  This makes it a web page generator, editor, and designer all in one.

Does your computer have a virus

If your computer is slow and un responsive at times, it might have a virus.  Now a lot of people right away take this to a fix it shop and fork some dough to have it delt with.  There are alot of great Anti virus programs on the web now for windows vista.

Before you are ready to give up on your machine, try downloading a free anti  virus program and letting it do a system scan.  I have found that even with a computer that is full of problems, a free virus scan can get it functioning in as little as 30min.

One of the best Anti Virus programs out there is Avast! www.avast.com They have been around for a long time, and they do have a free version.  It does require you to register and get a registration number in your email.  They dont spam you and their product is great.  After using the free home version, I’m sure alot of people end up buying the paid versions for the corporate offices.
